“Settle your quarrels, come together, understand the reality of our situation, understand that fascism is already here, that people are already dying who could be saved, that generations more will live poor butchered half-lives if you fail to act. Reginald Thomas

One Year Vigil

Saturday Sept 30, 2017

252 E. Orange Grove Blvd
Pasadena, CA 91104

At around 3am on September 30, 2016, Reginald "JR" Thomas was killed when he was accosted by Pasadena Police officers Thomas Butler, Matthew Griffin, Jeffery Newlen, Michael Orosco, Phillip Poirrier, Raphael Santiago, Aguilar, Aaron Villicana, Corporal Gomez, and Pham Puong after a call of distress.

Reginald, called the police on himself, because he was afraid and needed help. He had a history with the Pasadena Police and it was known he had substance and mental stress issues. This wasn't the first time the PPD had come across Reginald on several occasions. No incident before this ended in violence.

When officers arrived, his teenage son was on the phone with a dispatcher and he was explaining the situation, but it didn't matter. They beat JR, tasered him and hog-tied him in front of 5 of his children and their mother.

The Pasadena Police asked the family to leave the home and wait outside on the street and left  JR in his family's living room for 14 hours. It took a couple of hours before an ambulance even arrived on the scene and the family never received grievance counseling of any kind the entire day. It was 90 degrees outside and they weren't even offered water by the City of Pasadena. Councilman Victor Gordo never came to see what had gone on in his district. Hours after the incident he called Pastor McCall at D'Veal to go offer grief counseling.

There has been an open investigation by the L.A. County Sheriff's office, but we all know, police don't really investigate police. The family of Reginald Thomas has yet to receive any answers. There has been no prosecutions of the officers involved in that fatal night. The autopsy report has not been released and JR's grandmother/mother, still has not received his death certificate, which means the insurance company has yet to reimburse his grandmother for the funeral expenses.

This is creating a financial hardship for the family.

The officers involved in the murder of JR Thomas are currently on active duty and still harassing the Black community of Northwest Pasadena. Officers Matthew Griffin and Jeffery Newlen were the 2 officers involved in the murder of unarmed 19 year old Kendrec McDade, killed March 24, 2012. These officers are vigilantes, taking the law into their own hands. These officers are becoming the judge, Jur , and executioners.

When will we, the community, say enough is enough and put an end to the police terror we are facing. It is up to us, the community, to stop them.

If you see these officers, immediately start to film them. We need our own documentation so we can file the complaints we need to start creating a paper trail on these corrupt cops, so when the time comes and officers start receiving indictments they can’t say well this officer has zero complaints. He has an outstanding record. There will be proof to back us up.

There are several questions i pose for the community,  What are you willing to do to get free? Do you love your community enough to fight for it?

It is our duty as black Pasadena to fight for freedom, it is our duty to win, we must love and protect one another, we have nothing to lose but our chains.

Now let's get free.
