When Robert Jones Jr. was going into his senior year at Pasadena High School, the drummer tried out for the drum major position. He wasn't chosen, but he persevered. After graduation at PHS Robert was a recipient of the Gerald Freeny Scholarship Award. The same Gerald Freeny who just happens to be the president of the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade.
Now Robert comes home for the holidays to co-lead the Alabama State Unversity Mighty Marching Hornets in the 2019 parade as a third-year drum major. Known as one of the best bands in the country, it is more like fate than coincidence that Robert will be there with Gerald, and Gerald titled the theme of the 2019 parade "Melody of Life". The stars aligned for this to happen and to top it off, Chaka Khan is the grand marshal Mr. Freeny chose.
We ask that all come out and support Robert during this remarkable experience and see some Black Pasadena history in the making.
