For the third year in a row, the Victory Bible Church Youth & Children's Ministry will perform The Way. If you’ve never been to a VBC Youth & Children's Ministry production, you’re in for a great show. Pasadena Black Pages was granted a preview of the musical The Way. Seeing over 70 children in grades K to 12 rehearse daily for the past three weeks, is seeing a future generation of relationships form into a sustainable Black Pasadena Community. The dedication from the parents and sacrificing of time shuttling kids back in forth like Uber is what makes this so special. It’s all about community and VBC is well on The Way to being a ‘Five Star’ worship center.
The Way – Journey to the One, is a loose adaptation of The Wiz. It looks and feels like The Wiz, but with some notable differences. The Way is the story of four friends learning that God has already equipped them with the very thing they thought they lacked. Remember, The Wiz hid behind smoke and mirrors offering cryptic answers only after having them complete some impossible task. In this production, the One is the Son of God, who truly has all the answers and is able to help them overcome any challenge they face.
Never before has the journey of discovering who God is and what he's placed in you, been more entertaining and uplifting. This is not a production you want to miss. Under the direction of Bonita Bennett, the first time playwright collaborated with Tanya DeCuir and Donald Pearson to reproduce the 1970’s classic Broadway musical. Bonita described this as no easy task. “Without the collective efforts, there’s no way we could pull this off. We wanted the children to have a professional, yet practical experience.”
This year's main cast is loaded with talent. Kingston McKoy is playing the lead role of Danielle the lost girl searching for the way home. AJ Hudson is the Lion, Manny Shorter, Tinman, and Mateo Hernandez is playing the Scarecrow. From the looks of rehearsal, Kingston McCoy is sure to rise to the occasion and give an unforgettable performance.
